What is HPDI?

The HPDI fuel system is a fully integrated “tank to tip” solution based on diesel technology. It offers all of the range, performance and drivability of a diesel engine.

The high pressure direct injection, or HPDI internal combustion engine system is today’s most fuelflexible solution in terms of which low carbon fuels it can run on, including renewable natural gas, hydrogen, e-Fuels and biofuels.

Engines can achieve higher horsepower and torque by using direct injection and relying on high pressures in the combustion chamber for ignition. Subsequently, the characteristic of the engine using an HPDI fuel system is very similar to a diesel engine.

At the heart of the engine is a revolutionary patented injector with a dual concentric needle design. It delivers small quantities of diesel fuel and large quantities of natural gas, at high pressure, to the combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke.
